Lagos Blames Flash Floods on High Tides Blocking Drainage

Lagos, July 9, 2025

The Lagos State Government has attributed recent flash flooding in parts of the city to a natural phenomenon known as tidal lock-up, caused by elevated tide levels in the Atlantic Ocean and Lagos Lagoon, which temporarily block stormwater from draining into the sea.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that when rains occur during high tide, the water has nowhere to exit, causing it to back up in low-lying areas. However, the flooding is expected to recede within one to two hours after the tide lowers once the rain stops  .

Emergency response and drainage teams have been deployed to affected areas to monitor the situation and prevent prolonged disruption. Wahab urged residents to avoid dumping waste into drainage systems, such obstructions worsen flash flooding, and urged compliance with proper waste disposal practices  .

This update follows earlier warnings issued in June to communities near rivers and lagoons about heightened flood risk due to heavy rain and rising water levels  .

As Lagos upgrades its drainage infrastructure and public awareness, residents are advised to remain alert during heavy rainfall, especially in coastal and low-lying zones.
