Lagos Celebrates World Blood Donor Day 2025 with Rain-Defying Awareness Walk, Youth Extravaganza, Donation Drive

Lagos, Nigeria – June 14, 2025

Despite heavy rainfall, Lagos State on Friday joined the global community to commemorate World Blood Donor Day 2025 with a vibrant awareness walk, youth-focused activities, and a voluntary blood donation drive, all aimed at promoting safe blood supply and encouraging regular donations.

The event, themed “20 Years of Celebrating Giving: Thank You, Blood Donors!” was organized by the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service (LSBTS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and several civil society partners.

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, who flagged off the walk at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), commended voluntary donors for their life-saving contributions, calling them “unsung heroes” whose selflessness sustains the state’s healthcare system.

The day’s activities featured an awareness parade through major streets in Ikeja, a youth health and wellness fair, and a live blood donation session manned by trained medical staff. Dozens of young people, inspired by the campaign’s energy and message, registered as first-time donors.

Executive Secretary of LSBTS, Dr. Bodunrin Osikomaiya, emphasized the ongoing need for consistent donations to meet transfusion demands in hospitals, especially for maternal care, accident victims, and patients with blood disorders.

World Blood Donor Day is observed annually on June 14 to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and to thank voluntary, unpaid donors for their life-saving gifts.
