After a 23-year absence from Lagos State’s sporting calendar, the revived Commissioner’s Cup will reach its pinnacle this Sunday at Alade Stadium in Ipaja.
The tournament, sponsored by Lagos State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, will feature Dr Watts FC and Trade Safe FC in what promises to be an explosive final showdown.
Football enthusiasts will also witness De Gunner FA battle De Gratia FC for the third-place position, while a special novelty match between SGH Amazon and Flourish Queens will set the stage for the main event.
According to the Local Organising Committee Chairman, Tajudeen Olatigbe, the final day’s activities have been meticulously planned to deliver “the best ever watched in grassroots football” with “fun-filled moments for fans.”
There will be a substantial cash prizes awaiting the top-performing teams, with the champions receiving N500,000, runners-up N250,000, and the third-place team N150,000. Additionally, individual brilliance will be recognized through awards for the tournament’s best player, highest goal scorer, and best goalkeeper.
The event has attracted significant attention from government circles, with several dignitaries expected to grace the occasion. These include former Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lateef Ibirogba; former Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf; and local government representatives Lukmon Orelope (Alimosho LGA 01) and Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho LGA 02).
Sports analysts note that the revival of the Commissioner’s Cup after more than two decades represents a significant boost to grassroots football development in Lagos State, providing a platform for young talents to showcase their skills and potentially launch professional careers.
