Lagos Energy Ministry Highlights Key Achievements, Charts Future at 2025 Ministerial Briefing

The Lagos State Government, through its Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, has reiterated its commitment to transforming Lagos into a sustainable energy-driven economy. This was disclosed by the Honourable Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.

Addressing journalists, Commissioner Ogunleye outlined several milestones achieved by the Ministry in the past year and unveiled plans designed to improve energy access, attract investment, and accelerate Lagos’ journey toward energy independence.

He emphasized the significance of the recently enacted Lagos State Electricity Law, 2024, which provides the legal framework for the state to regulate and manage its electricity market. According to him, the law allows Lagos to create a competitive power sector that accommodates private investments, drives efficiency, and expands access to underserved communities.

“Our aim is to ensure that every resident in Lagos has reliable and affordable electricity. The new electricity law has placed the power to shape our energy future directly in our hands,” Ogunleye said.

In his remarks, the Commissioner stated that Lagosians currently spend approximately ₦13 trillion monthly on electricity from various sources, a figure the government is working to reduce through better regulatory oversight and increased generation capacity. He revealed that the state is developing plans to inject at least 1,000 megawatts of non-renewable power into the grid while aggressively exploring renewable energy alternatives to meet rising demand.

Highlighting future engagements, Ogunleye announced that the Lagos Energy Summit 2025 will take place from April 15 to 17. The summit, themed “Journey to Energy for All,” will bring together local and international stakeholders to explore scalable and sustainable energy solutions tailored to Lagos’ unique needs.

He also spoke on the government’s push to accelerate off-grid energy access across rural and peri-urban communities, citing ongoing projects that support mini-grid systems and other decentralized energy platforms.

“These initiatives form part of our broader vision to transform Lagos into a 24-hour economy where electricity is no longer a luxury but a guaranteed right,” he said.

Commissioner Ogunleye reaffirmed the Sanwo-Olu administration’s focus on leveraging energy as a catalyst for economic development, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.

The press briefing served as a platform to update the public on the Ministry’s progress while reinforcing the Lagos State Government’s pledge to build a resilient energy future for its over 20 million residents.
