Lagos, Nigeria — August 13, 2025 | In a bold step towards transforming urban management, the Lagos State Government will next week launch a pioneering digital house numbering system in Ikeja, the state capital. The initiative is designed to modernise property identification, improve urban planning, and enhance service delivery across the metropolis.
Under the new scheme, traditional address plates will be replaced with unique, scannable digital codes linked to a centralised database. This will provide detailed property profiles accessible to government agencies, emergency responders, logistics companies, and utility providers.
The Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development says the move will not only simplify location tracking but also help combat challenges such as unregistered properties, poor tax compliance, and delays in emergency response. The pilot programme in Ikeja will serve as a blueprint for statewide adoption, with other local government areas set to follow in phases.
Commissioner for Physical Planning, Oluyinka Olumide, stressed that the project forms part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s smart city vision, which aims to integrate technology into everyday urban infrastructure.
Property owners and residents have been urged to cooperate with officials and contractors during the exercise, which will involve on-site verification and tagging of buildings to ensure accurate and up-to-date records.
