Lagos Government Flags Off Major Drainage Project to Curb Flooding

Lagos, Nigeria | September 6, 2025 – The Lagos State Government has commenced the construction of a large-scale drainage project aimed at addressing perennial flooding across key parts of the metropolis.

The project, spearheaded by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, is designed to expand water channels, upgrade existing drain systems, and ensure free flow of stormwater during heavy rains. Officials noted that the initiative is part of the state’s flood resilience strategy under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

According to the Commissioner for the Environment, the project will prioritize flood-prone communities that suffer severe disruption to livelihoods and businesses whenever heavy rainfall occurs. He added that the government had engaged local contractors and engineers to ensure timely delivery while emphasizing quality and sustainability.

Residents have been urged to support the initiative by refraining from dumping refuse in waterways, which worsens flooding. The government also warned that sanctions will be enforced against violators of environmental regulations.

Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to building a flood-resilient Lagos, stressing that the project will not only protect lives and property but also boost economic activity by reducing the impact of flooding on businesses and infrastructure.
