Lagos Government Issues Stern Warning to Commercial Bus Drivers on Route Violations, Illegal Parking

The Lagos State Government has issued a strict warning to commercial bus operators, particularly drivers of mini buses, popularly known as ‘Korope,’ against unauthorized route violations and illegal parking across the state.

In a statement released on Tuesday in Lagos, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Sola Giwa, reiterated the state government’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and maintaining order on Lagos roadways.

The statement, signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Taofiq Adebayo, emphasized the need for strict adherence to traffic laws, particularly regarding unauthorized route deviations and indiscriminate parking.

Giwa stated that the government’s directive aligns with ongoing efforts to improve traffic flow and ensure safer road usage across the metropolis.

“All commercial bus operators, particularly ‘Korope’ drivers, must immediately desist from using unauthorized routes. Any violation of this directive will attract severe legal consequences,” he warned.

To reinforce this policy, Giwa disclosed that LASTMA operatives have been instructed to intensify enforcement measures to curb reckless driving and unlawful road practices that obstruct free vehicular movement and contribute to urban gridlock.

Additionally, the government warned against the indiscriminate use of public roadways for illegal parking and loading activities, which significantly worsen traffic congestion and pose risks to other road users.

“All commercial bus operators are hereby instructed to restrict their operations to designated bus stops and terminals to prevent unnecessary obstructions to vehicular movement,” Giwa added.

He further stressed that illegal parking and frequent violations of designated routes by ‘Korope’ drivers have become a major concern in Lagos, disrupting traffic and compromising public safety.

“These reckless practices will no longer be tolerated. Beyond traffic congestion, strict compliance with designated routes is also crucial for security reasons, as it helps prevent criminal activities involving commercial vehicles,” he stated.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining road discipline, enhancing public safety, and ensuring a more efficient urban transportation system through strict enforcement of traffic regulations.
