LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has joined the Philippine Consulate and members of the Filipino community in Nigeria to commemorate the 127th anniversary of the Philippines’ independence, reaffirming the state’s commitment to promoting cultural diversity, international friendship, and mutual cooperation.
The colourful event, held at the Philippine Consulate in Lagos, brought together government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of the Filipino Association in Nigeria. The celebration featured a ceremonial flag-hoisting, traditional Filipino music and dances, and cultural exhibitions that reflected the rich heritage of the Southeast Asian nation.
Representing the Lagos State Government, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Olusegun Adepoju, described the occasion as a demonstration of global unity and peaceful coexistence. He noted that Lagos, as Nigeria’s economic and cultural hub, remains open to international partnerships that foster multicultural understanding, investment, and tourism.
“Today’s gathering highlights the harmony that can exist in a cosmopolitan society like Lagos. We value the contributions of the Filipino community to our local economy and cultural diversity. The Lagos State Government is always ready to support initiatives that promote unity and international cooperation,” Adepoju said.
Philippine Consul-General, Ambassador Maria Teresa L. Rivera, while expressing appreciation to the Lagos State Government, said the celebration marks the enduring resilience of the Filipino people and the strengthening relationship between the Philippines and Nigeria. She noted that the Filipino community in Lagos continues to thrive and contribute meaningfully to sectors such as health, education, and commerce.
“This anniversary reminds us not only of our freedom but also of our shared humanity. We are grateful for the support of the Lagos State Government and for the opportunity to celebrate with our Nigerian friends,” she added.
Members of the Filipino Association showcased native dances, cuisine, and crafts, providing guests with a glimpse into the traditions and values of the Philippines. Attendees were treated to Filipino delicacies and cultural displays, while guests from Nigeria and other nationalities praised the event for fostering international unity and cultural appreciation.
The ceremony concluded with the exchange of souvenirs and commendations, as Lagos State reaffirmed its readiness to deepen ties with diplomatic communities through continued cultural engagements and collaboration.
