Lagos Government Reacts to Peter Obi’s Claims Over Demolition of Brother’s Property

The Lagos State Government has formally responded to comments made by the former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, concerning the recent demolition of a property reportedly belonging to his brother in Lagos.

Obi had expressed disapproval over the demolition, describing it as unjust and calling for respect for citizens’ rights irrespective of political affiliation, ethnicity, or region. His comments quickly gained traction across media platforms, sparking debates and reactions from various quarters.

However, in a swift reaction, the Lagos State Government clarified that the property in question was among several structures removed as part of an ongoing enforcement exercise aimed at reclaiming illegal developments and restoring compliance with the state’s physical planning laws. Government officials emphasized that the demolition was not targeted at any individual or family but was based purely on legal and regulatory grounds.

According to the state’s Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, the building was marked for removal following repeated violations of building regulations and failure to obtain the necessary permits and approvals. The ministry stated that due process was followed, including multiple notices issued to the property owners over an extended period, none of which were heeded.

Officials maintained that the enforcement exercise is part of the government’s broader efforts to ensure public safety, prevent environmental hazards, and curb the rising trend of illegal constructions across the state. The government further stressed that the action was devoid of any political or ethnic motives, as it affects structures from various groups and individuals found to be in breach of existing laws.

The state government has urged members of the public, including high-profile citizens, to support urban development regulations and avoid politicizing lawful actions carried out in the public interest. The administration reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law, assuring that all enforcement activities will continue to be guided by fairness, transparency, and accountability.
