The Lagos State Government has announced plans to intensify enforcement and raids against the use, distribution, and sale of banned single-use plastics across the state.
This move follows a renewed commitment by the state to tackle plastic pollution, safeguard the environment, and promote a cleaner, healthier Lagos under its circular economy and sustainability goals.
Speaking through the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the government stated that officers of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and other regulatory bodies will begin coordinated enforcement actions across markets, streets, and public spaces in the coming weeks.
The Commissioner warned that individuals, businesses, or manufacturers caught violating the ban on single-use plastics—particularly Styrofoam food containers and nylon bags—will face stiff penalties, including fines and possible closure of business premises.
He emphasized that single-use plastics pose a serious threat to marine life, block drainage systems, and contribute significantly to urban flooding.
Wahab called on residents and business owners to embrace sustainable alternatives such as paper bags, reusable containers, and biodegradable packaging materials. He added that the state would also launch public sensitization campaigns to educate citizens on the environmental and health risks posed by indiscriminate plastic usage.
The crackdown is part of Lagos State’s broader agenda to become a cleaner, eco-friendly megacity aligned with global climate goals.
