Lagos Introduces QR Code System to Boost Healthcare Transparency, Quality, and Tackle Quackery

Lagos State Government, through the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), has launched a Quick Response (QR) Code system aimed at enhancing transparency, improving service quality, and combating quackery across health facilities in the state.

The development was announced by the Executive Secretary of HEFAMAA, Dr. Abiola Idowu, who revealed that the initiative is part of the state’s ongoing reforms to promote accountability in the health sector and protect residents from substandard or illegal medical practices.

According to Dr. Idowu, the QR Code will be affixed to all accredited health facilities in Lagos, allowing patients and regulatory officials to instantly access vital information about any clinic, hospital, or diagnostic centre using a smartphone. The digital tag provides real-time verification of a facility’s registration status, ownership, service offerings, and compliance history.

She emphasized that the move is designed to empower the public, enhance the visibility of legitimate facilities, and expose unlicensed operators endangering lives. “By simply scanning the QR Code displayed at a facility’s entrance, patients can know whether they are in safe hands. It’s a game-changer for transparency and public confidence,” she said.

The agency further noted that the QR Code technology will also help the government track, audit, and sanction erring facilities more effectively. This aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus agenda, especially in strengthening health governance and accountability.

Residents have been encouraged to look out for the QR Code display when accessing medical services and to report any suspicious or unregistered health centres to HEFAMAA for investigation. The state government also reiterated its commitment to maintaining global best practices in healthcare delivery across both public and private sectors.
