The Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, a premier maternal and neonatal healthcare institution in Nigeria, celebrated its 65th anniversary on Monday, July 7, 2025, marking over six decades of unwavering dedication to maternal and child health.

Founded in 1960, the hospital has stood as a beacon of hope for thousands of families, delivering generations of Lagosians and playing a crucial role in reducing maternal and infant mortality in the state.

At a commemorative event held within the hospital premises, dignitaries from the Lagos State Ministry of Health, past and present medical staff, and community leaders gathered to honour the institution’s legacy. The event featured a thanksgiving service, medical outreach, and award presentations to long-serving staff members.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Modupe Olowookere, praised the hospital’s evolution over the years. “From humble beginnings, we have grown into one of the most reliable maternity centres in Nigeria, with state-of-the-art facilities, a committed workforce, and countless success stories,” she said.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, who was represented at the event, reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening maternal healthcare. “This hospital exemplifies our vision for quality and accessible healthcare for all. We will continue to invest in training, equipment, and infrastructure,” he stated.

As part of the celebrations, the hospital also launched a commemorative publication chronicling its journey and impact since inception. The milestone event not only celebrated the past but also set a renewed agenda for future improvements in maternal and neonatal health in Lagos State.
