Lagos Launches 24/7 Digital Traffic Eye to Propel Smart City Vision

Lagos State has activated a cutting-edge 24/7 digital traffic monitoring system as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance urban mobility and achieve its smart city aspirations. The new system, known as the Live Camera Update (LCU) project, was officially launched by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at an event in Ikeja on October 19, 2023.

The LCU system is designed to provide real-time surveillance across key traffic hubs in the state, offering continuous updates on road conditions. Equipped with over 300 strategically positioned cameras, the system will monitor major roads and intersections, allowing residents to access live traffic information. This will help alleviate congestion, reduce travel time, and improve road safety, according to officials.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, while launching the project, underscored its importance in the state’s journey to becoming a leading smart city in Africa. “This initiative reflects our commitment to integrating technology into everyday life to make Lagos more efficient, livable, and sustainable,” the governor said.

The LCU system will be powered by Lagos Traffic Radio 96.1 FM, which will provide up-to-the-minute traffic reports and travel advisories for commuters across the state. Tayo Akanle, the General Manager of Lagos Traffic Radio, explained that the system is intended to boost traffic reportage by offering timely and accurate updates. “This service will assist commuters in making better travel decisions, ensuring smoother movement across the city,” Akanle stated.

The initiative is part of the state’s broader plan to implement an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) that uses advanced technologies like smart cameras and e-policing tools to reduce traffic violations and enhance road safety. The project is expected to play a pivotal role in improving urban mobility and ensuring that Lagos becomes a more connected and efficient city.

As Lagos continues to grow and face the challenges of urbanization, the introduction of the LCU system is a critical step toward addressing the complexities of modern city living. This move not only advances the state’s smart city goals but also positions Lagos as a leader in the integration of technology to solve urban challenges.
