The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening due process and transparency in public procurement, as part of broader efforts to deepen accountability and ensure value for money in the delivery of public services.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement held in Alausa on Friday, officials of the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency (PPA) emphasized that reforms are underway to further tighten procurement procedures across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). The move, they said, aims to curb irregularities, promote competition, and boost public confidence in government contracting processes.
Director-General of the Lagos PPA, Mr. Fatai Idowu Onafowote, highlighted that the state government remains determined to align its procurement practices with international best standards, in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision for a more transparent and efficient public sector. He noted that technology is playing an increasingly central role, with e-procurement platforms now being deployed to automate tender processes, enhance monitoring, and reduce opportunities for human interference.
According to Onafowote, the Agency is also intensifying capacity-building programs for procurement officers across the state’s MDAs to ensure strict compliance with the Lagos State Public Procurement Law and guidelines. He stressed that contractors and service providers must equally uphold ethical standards, warning that erring parties risk blacklisting and legal sanctions.
Stakeholders present at the engagement, including representatives of civil society organizations and private sector groups, commended the government’s initiatives but called for even greater openness, particularly in the publishing of contract awards and project implementation reports.
The renewed emphasis on due process comes at a time when Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, is undertaking several major infrastructure projects critical to its economic and social development. By strengthening procurement integrity, the state aims to safeguard public resources, foster investor confidence, and deliver projects that genuinely serve the interests of the people.
