Lagos Orders Mandatory Inspection of All E-Hailing Vehicles to Enhance Safety and Compliance

Lagos, Nigeria – August 10, 2025

The Lagos State Government has directed all licensed e-hailing operators, including Uber, Bolt, Lagride, and InDrive, to present their vehicles for a mandatory inspection as part of a comprehensive audit aimed at improving safety, service quality, and regulatory compliance.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the directive on Sunday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account following a stakeholder engagement with e-hailing operators at the Ministry of Transportation, Alausa, Ikeja. He said the decision was prompted by the deplorable condition of some vehicles currently in operation on licensed platforms.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Olawale Musa, added that only vehicles registered with the Lagos State Government and driven by operators certified by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) will be allowed to operate. Vehicles deemed unfit will be barred from service, and operators failing to comply with the inspection requirements risk sanctions.

The government also cautioned commuters against booking rides offline, warning that doing so bypasses in-app safety features. Representatives from the affected ride-hailing companies stated that safety upgrades have been introduced, including enhanced driver verification, mandatory license checks, emergency panic buttons, and tighter onboarding processes.
