In a bold stride toward a cleaner and more sustainable environment, the Lagos State Government has entered into a strategic partnership with ZoomLion Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group. This landmark agreement is set to revolutionise the state’s waste management system and reduce the environmental burden posed by the 13,000 tonnes of waste generated daily across the metropolis.
The agreement, witnessed by top officials and stakeholders in the sanitation and environmental sectors, underscores the government’s commitment to modernising waste disposal methods and enhancing urban hygiene.
As part of the initiative, a Transfer Loading Station will be constructed at the Olusosun dumpsite, one of the state’s most notorious refuse sites. The project will facilitate the complete shutdown of Olusosun, a move long overdue given its environmental hazards. From there, an estimated 2,500 tonnes of waste will be transported daily to a new Material Recovery Facility in Ikorodu.
Similarly, a parallel development will be executed at the Solous III dumpsite in Igando, where another facility will be built to redirect 1,500 tonnes of waste per day to a modern recovery centre in Badagry. These infrastructural upgrades aim to reduce pressure on existing dumpsites while promoting recycling and waste recovery.
The Lagos State Government revealed that the project is expected to generate over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, further contributing to the state’s economic growth and youth empowerment efforts.
Beyond job creation, this partnership aligns with Lagos State’s broader environmental vision, one rooted in global standards of sustainability, sanitation, and urban planning. It marks another concrete step in the administration’s push to make Lagos a model mega-city in Africa, where environmental responsibility and public health go hand in hand.
With this initiative, the state is not only tackling waste but also sending a clear message of intent: Lagos is serious about environmental stewardship and building a livable city for all its residents.
