The Lagos State Government has sealed Global International College, located in the Ikate-Elegushi area of Lekki, for allegedly discharging untreated faecal sludge and wastewater into public drainage systems.
The state authorities, through the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), carried out the enforcement following an investigation that revealed the school was releasing effluents directly into the environment without treatment, posing a serious public health and environmental hazard.
In a statement issued on Friday, the government described the school’s action as a flagrant violation of environmental laws, stressing that such practices contaminate water sources, compromise air quality, and endanger residents, particularly in densely populated urban neighbourhoods like Lekki.
The General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Tunde Ajayi, who led the enforcement operation, reiterated the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental infractions, especially those involving untreated waste discharge. He added that the school had been previously warned but failed to comply with directives.
“We cannot fold our arms and watch institutions, no matter how reputable, endanger the lives of Lagosians. Environmental integrity must not be compromised,” Dr. Ajayi stated.
The government has ordered a full environmental audit of the school and directed the management to rectify all violations before any consideration of reopening. The school will also face sanctions in line with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law.
Residents have been urged to report similar environmental offences in their areas to safeguard public health and maintain ecological balance in the state.
