Lagos State Government Has Announced Plans To Permanently Close The Olusosun And Igando Dumpsites-

As part of a comprehensive waste management reform aimed at transforming how waste is handled across the state. This landmark initiative was formalized through a partnership agreement with ZoomLion Nigeria, a subsidiary of the Ghana-based Jospong Group.

Under the deal, Transfer Loading Stations will be constructed at both Olusosun and Solous III (Igando) dumpsites, enabling waste to be diverted efficiently to new Material Recovery Facilities located in Ikorodu and Badagry. The facility at Ikorodu will handle approximately 2,500 tonnes of waste daily, while the one at Badagry is expected to process 1,500 tonnes.

The shutdown and rehabilitation of these major dumpsites is scheduled to commence soon, with plans to cover the existing sites with geotextiles and install solar panels to reduce environmental hazards. Rather than causing job losses, the project is expected to generate over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, boosting local employment.

This reform aligns with Lagos State’s broader vision to promote sustainable urban living by shifting towards a circular economy that emphasizes recycling, waste reduction, and cleaner environmental practices. The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has also introduced a waste segregation program to increase recycling rates across the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the partnership as a crucial step in building a cleaner, healthier Lagos and improving the efficiency of waste collection services, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for residents.
