The Lagos State Government has issued an early alert regarding an extended and intense rainy season in 2025, with above-normal rainfall levels and a delayed cessation expected to last until December.
Speaking at the Seasonal Climate Prediction briefing in Alausa, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, revealed that Lagos would experience a prolonged wet season, beginning in late March and continuing until early December.
In a post on X on Sunday, Wahab stated, “The rainy season is expected to start in the last week of March and extend until the first week of December, with an average annual rainfall of 1,936mm—higher than the long-term average from 1991 to 2020.”
The forecast, he explained, is influenced by the neutral phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation, which is expected to persist through most of the year. As a result, Lagos and neighboring Ogun State will see an increase in precipitation, affecting key areas such as Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe.
“Ikeja will see its first rains on April 2, with the season ending on December 2, and an annual rainfall of 1,900mm. In Badagry, rainfall will begin on March 30 and conclude on December 4, totaling 1,978mm,” he detailed.
The commissioner warned that the high rainfall levels could lead to flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, while strong winds at the beginning and end of the season might disrupt daily life and business activities.
“There is a risk of flash floods in certain parts of the state, and strong winds could cause disruptions, including flight delays and economic losses,” he cautioned.
Wahab assured residents that the government is implementing flood control measures to minimize the impact of the rainy season, emphasizing that ongoing collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is key to preparedness and climate adaptation.
“The Lagos State government is working closely with NiMet to enhance early warning systems, which are critical for farmers, businesses, and residents in affected areas,” he said.
He urged Lagosians to stay informed through official weather updates and take precautionary measures to safeguard their homes and businesses as the city braces for an intense and prolonged rainy season.
