Lagos Task Force Nabs Driver Caught Dumping Waste on Lekki-Epe Expressway

Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Task Force have apprehended a driver for illegally dumping refuse along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, a flagrant violation of the state’s environmental protection laws.

The arrest was confirmed on Monday by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who made the disclosure via his verified X handle (formerly Twitter). Wahab revealed that the culprit was caught red-handed by operatives of the task force during routine monitoring and was immediately taken into custody.

According to the commissioner, the vehicle used in the act was also confiscated on the spot. “His vehicle was intercepted along the Lekki-Epe Expressway while its driver was caught in the act of illegally dumping refuse on the highway. The driver has been arrested, the vehicle seized, and he will be arraigned in court immediately,” Wahab stated.

He used the opportunity to issue a firm warning to residents across the state, reiterating that the government would no longer condone acts that endanger both the environment and public health. Wahab stressed that such infractions not only deface the city but also pose serious health risks to the populace.

“Let this serve as a clear warning: Lagos State will not tolerate acts that endanger our environment and public health. Enforcement is active, and violators will be held fully accountable,” he warned.

The commissioner further appealed to residents to embrace responsible waste disposal habits, emphasizing that sustaining a cleaner, healthier Lagos is a collective responsibility. He maintained that enforcement operations will continue across the state, urging citizens to comply with sanitation laws or face the full weight of the law.

This latest arrest underscores the state government’s intensified efforts to curb indiscriminate dumping and promote environmental discipline in line with its broader agenda for urban renewal and public health safety.
