Lagos, September 3, 2025 – Lagos State is set to make history in October as it hosts Africa’s first-ever E1 Electric Boat Race International Competition, marking a major milestone for sports innovation and eco-friendly technology on the continent.
The high-profile event will feature some of the world’s leading teams and athletes racing cutting-edge electric-powered boats on Lagos waters. Organizers say the competition, part of the globally recognized E1 Series, will not only showcase thrilling water sport but also spotlight Lagos as a rising hub for tourism, sustainability, and international sporting events.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu welcomed the development, describing it as a “historic and transformational opportunity” for Lagos and Nigeria. He noted that the event aligns with the state’s Blue Economy Agenda, which focuses on harnessing the potential of Lagos waterways for transportation, sports, and economic growth.
“This event is beyond sport. It represents innovation, sustainability, and global recognition for Lagos. We are ready to host the world and demonstrate our capacity to drive both economic and environmental progress,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The E1 Series, often referred to as the “Formula 1 of the seas,” was created to accelerate the transition toward clean energy in water transport. While previous races have been staged in Europe and the Middle East, the October edition in Lagos will be the first on African waters, underscoring Nigeria’s growing role in global sustainable development initiatives.
Tourism and hospitality operators in Lagos are already preparing for a surge of international visitors, with analysts predicting a significant boost to the state’s economy.
