LAMATA Engages Stakeholders on Blue Line Depot Construction, Unveils Compensation Plan

In a move to foster transparency and community participation, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has commenced a series of engagements with stakeholders ahead of the construction of the Blue Line Depot at Okokomaiko, Lagos.

The engagement, held recently, brought together residents, community leaders, property owners, and civil society representatives from the impacted areas. The meeting served as a platform for LAMATA to unveil its construction roadmap for the Blue Line Depot and clarify compensation modalities for those whose properties or livelihoods may be affected by the project.

Speaking at the forum, LAMATA’s Director of Rail Transport, Engr. Olasunkanmi Okusaga, assured attendees that the Lagos State Government remains committed to fair and transparent processes in its urban transport development. He emphasized that no property will be demolished or affected without due process, including proper valuation and compensation.

“We are not just building infrastructure; we are building trust and inclusiveness,” Okusaga stated. “The Blue Line Depot is critical to the operations of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit system, and we are determined to implement it in a manner that respects human rights and fosters sustainable development.”

He noted that independent valuers have already been engaged to assess the impact on affected properties and that compensation will be disbursed accordingly to verified owners and occupants.

Several participants at the forum expressed appreciation for the consultation process, though some voiced concerns about the speed of the compensation and clarity in communication. In response, LAMATA officials promised to set up dedicated help desks and feedback channels for continuous updates and grievance redress.

The Blue Line Depot is part of the broader Lagos State Government’s effort to expand its rail transport infrastructure under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration. Once completed, the depot will serve as the operational nerve center for the Blue Line rail services, supporting efficient train operations, maintenance, and passenger convenience.

LAMATA’s community engagement approach aligns with international best practices on public infrastructure development, emphasizing the importance of carrying local communities along to minimize displacement-related tensions and ensure long-term project sustainability.

Construction of the Blue Line Depot is expected to begin in the coming months, with full implementation guided by Lagos State’s Resettlement Policy and environmental safeguards.
