The Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) has taken decisive action against individuals involved in the unauthorized removal and destruction of advertising structures along Admiralty Way in Lekki.
Officials from LASAA apprehended those responsible for what they described as the “deliberate vandalism” of legally approved street lamp pole advertisements. The agency’s swift intervention underscores its commitment to protecting businesses’ rights and maintaining order within Lagos’s advertising sector.
In a statement released over the weekend, LASAA’s Head of Corporate Communications and Strategy, Atinuke da-Silva-Osadjere, reaffirmed that legal action would be taken against those found guilty of violating advertising regulations.
“The law will take its course,” she stated, emphasizing the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on unauthorized interference with commercial signage.
The incident follows complaints from the Lekki Peninsula Residents Association (LERA), which had reportedly expressed concerns over the aesthetics of outdoor advertisements in the area. The dispute has sparked a broader debate over balancing community beautification efforts with the commercial rights of advertisers operating in Lagos.
LASAA has reiterated its role as the primary regulatory body overseeing outdoor advertising in the state, emphasizing that businesses must be allowed to operate within the legal framework without fear of unlawful disruption.
“We recognize the essential role outdoor advertising plays in business promotion and community engagement,” da-Silva-Osadjere said. “Our priority is to ensure all advertising activities align with established regulations while fostering a business-friendly environment.”
To prevent future conflicts, LASAA is advocating for greater collaboration between advertisers, local authorities, and community associations. The agency is calling for open dialogue and stakeholder engagement to address concerns related to outdoor advertising without resorting to illegal actions.
“This incident serves as a strong reminder that outdoor advertising regulations exist to create a structured and fair business environment,” the agency stated.
By swiftly addressing the Lekki billboard vandalism case, LASAA aims to reinforce investor confidence in Lagos’s commercial sector while ensuring that advertising remains a regulated and orderly industry. The agency remains open to discussions with residents and business owners, encouraging cooperation to maintain a thriving economic landscape.
