Lagos, July 18, 2025 — The Lagos State Government has issued a fresh advisory to residents living in flood-prone areas, urging them to adopt a positive change in attitude toward environmental management to prevent loss of lives and property as heavy rains intensify.
The government’s call comes amid increasing reports of blocked drainages, indiscriminate waste disposal, and illegal construction along waterways, practices that contribute significantly to flooding in the state.
In a statement released by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, residents were reminded of the importance of adhering to safety precautions, especially during the peak of the rainy season. He emphasized that flooding is not only a result of natural occurrences but also of avoidable human behavior.
Wahab said, “It is time we take collective responsibility. The government has invested heavily in cleaning and maintaining major drainage channels, but the full benefit will only be realized when residents stop dumping refuse into gutters and canals.”
He urged those residing in low-lying and flood-prone communities to be vigilant, relocate temporarily if necessary, and cooperate with emergency responders when required.
While reaffirming the state’s commitment to mitigating the impact of flooding through early warning systems, enforcement of building regulations, and improved infrastructure, the commissioner warned that no effort would yield desired results without citizens’ support.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has also been placed on high alert, with rescue teams on standby across the metropolis to respond promptly to emergencies.
