LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has clarified that its recent ban on single-use plastics does not extend to pure water sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, addressing public concerns and misinformation surrounding the directive.
The clarification was issued on Monday by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during a press briefing at Alausa, Ikeja.
Wahab explained that while the state remains committed to combating environmental pollution, the government is taking a phased approach to the regulation of plastic use, starting with specific non-recyclable and environmentally hazardous materials such as plastic cutlery, straws, and carrier bags.
“We are not banning sachet water or PET bottles at this stage. The focus is on the most problematic plastics that clog our drains and harm our ecosystem. However, we continue to encourage responsible disposal and recycling of all plastic products,” Wahab said.
He added that the government is working with manufacturers, waste managers, and environmental advocacy groups to strengthen recycling infrastructure and raise public awareness on sustainable waste practices.
The commissioner also emphasized the role of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) in enforcing the directive while ensuring minimal disruption to businesses and livelihoods.
Environmental stakeholders welcomed the clarification, noting that while sachets and bottles are recyclable, their indiscriminate disposal remains a concern. They urged residents to embrace proper waste segregation and support government efforts toward a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.
