LASIEC Releases Official List of Candidates Ahead of July 12 Local Government Elections

Lagos, July 11, 2025 — The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has officially released the list of candidates cleared to contest in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 2025.

In a statement issued by the Commission on Thursday, LASIEC confirmed that all the necessary screenings and verifications had been concluded, and the final list of qualified chairmanship and councillorship candidates across the 57 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state is now public.

According to the Commission, candidates from 18 registered political parties will be participating in the polls, with the All Progressives Congress (APC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and the Labour Party (LP) fielding the highest number of contestants across all councils.

The Commission emphasized that the publication of the candidate list is in line with the provisions of the Electoral Law and is intended to ensure transparency, public scrutiny, and electoral integrity ahead of the exercise.

Chairman of LASIEC, Hon. Justice Ayotunde Phillips (rtd), urged all candidates and political parties to abide by the rules and conduct themselves peacefully during the final phase of campaigns and the election proper.

“LASIEC is committed to conducting free, fair, and credible local government elections. We have taken all necessary steps to ensure transparency and inclusiveness,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command has announced a restriction of movement across the state from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm on election day to ensure public order and security during the polls.

The local government elections are expected to serve as a critical test of political strength ahead of future state and national contests, particularly for emerging parties seeking to gain grassroots influence in Nigeria’s most populous state.
