LASWA GM Advocates for Non-Fossil Fuel Boat Engines to Enhance Lagos Waterways Transportation

Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) General Manager Oluwadamilola Emmanuel has called for the introduction of hybrid boat engines to revolutionize waterways transportation in Lagos.

During a recent interview with The PUNCH, Emmanuel emphasized that moving away from traditional fossil fuel engines is “very, very clear” as the necessary direction for the sector’s future. He identified existing fossil fuel engines as a significant challenge that presents an opportunity for innovation and growth.

“We’ve had issues with fossil fuel engines, and it’s clear that we need non-fossil fuel engines,” Emmanuel stated. “Of course, there have been challenges, but we’ve had to be creative, and every time, challenges provide growth opportunities.”

Emmanuel detailed that LASWA is focusing on improvements in infrastructure, financing, and personnel training to support this transition. He specifically advocated for hybrid propulsion systems rather than purely electric solutions.

“It’s going to be a hybrid system; it can’t just be pure electric,” he explained. “It has to be a hybrid system. I want to say hybrid, and then when you have a hybrid system, electric goes along alongside solar and also a small compressed natural gas power.”

This initiative aligns with the Lagos State government’s broader strategy to develop waterways as a viable alternative to road transportation. The proposed adoption of hybrid engines is expected to reduce environmental impact while providing more sustainable and efficient water transportation options for Lagos residents.

LASWA continues to prioritize enhancing safety and efficiency in waterways transportation, with the introduction of non-fossil fuel boat engines representing a significant advancement in these efforts.
