Luka Modric, the iconic Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder, has joined Championship club Swansea City as an investor and co-owner, the club confirmed on Monday. The 39-year-old Croatian captain, who has spent over a decade at Real Madrid, helping the Spanish giants secure six UEFA Champions League titles, has now turned his attention to the English second-tier side.
Modric’s career took flight at Tottenham Hotspur before he moved to the Santiago Bernabeu, where his presence has been instrumental in the club’s continued success. Although the financial details of his investment in Swansea City have not been disclosed, the former Ballon d’Or winner expressed his enthusiasm about contributing to the growth of the Welsh club.
On the club’s official website, Modric shared his excitement: “This is an exciting opportunity. Swansea has a strong identity, an incredible fanbase, and the ambition to compete at the highest level. Having played at that level, I believe I can provide my experience to the club. My goal is to support the club’s growth in a positive way and help to build an exciting future.”
Despite this new venture, Modric’s focus remains on his current duties at Real Madrid. His team is set to play the crucial second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Arsenal on Wednesday, with Madrid trailing 3-0 after a devastating first-leg loss. With his contract at Real Madrid expiring at the end of the season, Modric’s future is uncertain, but his commitment to the game remains clear as he navigates this new chapter.
His move into football ownership follows a trend among his peers, with teammates like Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior also investing in clubs—Mbappe in Ligue 2 side Caen and Vinicius in Portuguese club FC Alverca.
Swansea City’s chief executive, Tom Gorringe, expressed his excitement about Modric’s involvement: “I am excited that Luka has come on board as an investor and co-owner. There is no better role model in the game for our players, from the academy right through to the first team.”
Currently, Swansea City sits in 12th place in the Championship, and Modric’s involvement is seen as a boost to the club’s ambitions to rise through the ranks and return to the Premier League.
