Makinde Declares PDP Open to All, Says Members Free to Join or Leave

IBADAN, Nigeria – July 17, 2025 – Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has affirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains a political platform with freedom of association, stating that individuals are at liberty to join or exit the party without restrictions.

Governor Makinde made the remarks while responding to recent defections and political realignments within the party, especially in the wake of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s resignation from partisan politics.

“There is freedom of entrance and exit in the PDP. Nobody is held against their will. It’s a political party that welcomes anyone who believes in its values and goals,” Makinde said during a media briefing at the Government House in Ibadan on Wednesday.

He emphasized that the PDP, both at the state and national levels, remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and delivering good governance. Makinde added that while defections are part of democratic dynamics, the PDP will continue to re-strategize and reposition itself ahead of future elections.

“We are not threatened. People come, people go, hat’s the nature of politics. What matters is the strength of our institutions and the trust of the people,” he added.

The governor also used the opportunity to call on party faithful to remain focused, loyal, and active in their respective wards, assuring that the PDP leadership is taking steps to reinforce internal unity and build a more inclusive platform.

Makinde’s comments come amid growing political shifts as various parties gear up for the next general elections and seek to consolidate influence across Nigeria’s political landscape.
