Makinde, Mbah Urge Diaspora Doctors to Help Curb Medical Tourism

The Governors of Oyo and Enugu States, Seyi Makinde and Peter Mbah, respectively, have called on Nigerian medical professionals in the diaspora to contribute their expertise and resources toward reversing the growing trend of medical tourism.

The appeal was made during a high-level dialogue with stakeholders in the health sector, where both governors stressed the urgent need for Nigeria to harness the capacity of its skilled professionals abroad to strengthen the nation’s healthcare system.

Joined by key federal government officials, the governors emphasized that sustainable healthcare delivery is critical to national development and urged diaspora doctors to invest in local health infrastructure, knowledge transfer, and capacity building.

Governor Makinde noted that with collaborative efforts and innovation, Nigeria can build a self-reliant health system that meets international standards. Governor Mbah echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of strategic partnerships and technology adoption to reduce dependence on foreign healthcare.

The leaders reaffirmed their administrations’ readiness to support enabling policies and remove bureaucratic hurdles that hinder diaspora engagement in the sector.
