Makinde Pledges Neutrality in Traditional Rulership Process as New Alaafin of Oyo is Crowned

Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to maintaining impartiality in the selection of traditional rulers, ensuring due process is followed at all times. Speaking during the coronation of Oba Abdulakeem Abimbola Owoade I as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo at Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo on Saturday, Makinde emphasized that his government would not interfere in the traditional selection process, but would ensure that all laid-down procedures are adhered to.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the governor commended the people of Oyo for their patience and resilience, which he said led to the peaceful ascension of Oba Owoade. He acknowledged the role of the Ifa Oracle and the people of Oyo in selecting the new monarch, affirming that it was the rightful choice for the throne, despite attempts by some individuals to influence the process.

Makinde recounted an earlier attempt by some parties to manipulate the Alaafin selection process, revealing that some had even gone public, claiming to be the Alaafin-elect. However, after conducting an investigation, the governor uncovered that bribery had been involved and made it clear that the Alaafin’s stool was not for sale, stating that he could not defend such actions before God.

The governor praised the resolution of the issue, which, he said, aligned with the traditions of their ancestors. He also stressed that under his leadership, the government would always uphold the integrity of traditional institutions, ensuring that no undue interference occurs and that the selection process remains fair and transparent.

Makinde further urged Oba Owoade to focus on the development of Oyo, assuring that the state government would continue to support initiatives such as the promotion of the World Sango Festival as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. He also called for an end to ongoing legal challenges to the coronation, urging those contesting the emergence of the new Alaafin to accept Oba Owoade as the chosen one by God, supported by both the people and the government of Oyo State.

The governor highlighted the significance of Oyo as a historical and cultural hub, emphasizing its role in preserving Yoruba heritage through landmarks like the Old Oyo National Park and the globally recognized Sango Festival. He reaffirmed that the town would continue to be a key player in the growth and development of Oyo State.
