Man Allegedly Murders Ex-lover After She Informed Him Of Wedding Plans

NSUKKA, ENUGU STATE — A man identified as Ogbonna, popularly known as “Mourinho,” has been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command for allegedly killing his former girlfriend, Chisom Ayogu, after she informed him of her plans to marry another man.

The incident occurred in Nsukka town on New Anglican Road, where the victim had reportedly gone to visit the suspect. According to community sources, Chisom, a native of Amufie in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area, informed Ogbonna during the visit that she was preparing to get married.

Eyewitnesses said a heated argument ensued between the two, which allegedly escalated into a violent assault. Neighbours who heard the commotion rushed to the scene and found Chisom unconscious. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The suspect, Ogbonna, is from the Igogoro community, also in Igbo-Eze North LGA. He was apprehended by local residents and handed over to police authorities.

Confirming the incident, a police source at the Nsukka Division said the suspect is currently in custody and assisting with the investigation. “We can confirm the arrest of one Ogbonna in connection with the murder of Chisom Ayogu. The case is under investigation, and the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of the process,” the source said.

The tragic event has sparked outrage in both communities, with many residents calling for swift justice for the victim. Civil society groups and gender rights activists have also condemned the act, describing it as a senseless and brutal murder rooted in possessiveness and violence against women.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at a morgue pending autopsy and further police procedures.

The Enugu State Police Command is expected to release an official statement on the matter in the coming days.
