The Attorney General of Ogun State has confirmed the release of an Abia indigene who was recently freed after spending 22 years in prison for a stolen-generator offence, clarifying that the convict, Ogbonna Igbojionu, had been properly convicted and later pardoned.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Attorney General, Mr. Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), dismissed media reports that Igbojionu was jailed merely for “buying a stolen generator.” He explained that the defendant was convicted for armed robbery on January 14, 2003, and initially sentenced to death by an Ogun State High Court. His sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment in June 2021, and he was finally granted a prerogative of mercy to commemorate Democracy Day 2025 .
Contrary to viral claims, Ogungbade underlined that there is no record showing Igbojionu was ever charged for purchasing a stolen generator. The allegations surrounding a generator have been described as “fabricated and a tissue of lies” by the state government .
According to Ogun State, the pardon was executed following due legal procedure and released through the constitutional prerogative, an exercise dependent on recommendations from an advisory committee led by the AG. Igbojionu now walks a free man, reunited with loved ones after more than two decades behind bars .
