Manchester City Sign Rayan Cherki from Lyon Ahead of Club World Cup Campaign

Manchester, UK – June 11, 2025 – In a strategic move ahead of the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, Manchester City have confirmed the signing of highly-rated French attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki from Olympique Lyonnais.

The 21-year-old playmaker joins the Premier League giants on a long-term deal believed to be worth around €35 million, including performance-based add-ons. Cherki, known for his flair, dribbling skill, and versatility across the front line, has been on the radar of several European heavyweights but opted for City due to the club’s ambition and Pep Guardiola’s track record with young talent.

The deal was finalised after weeks of negotiation, with Lyon reportedly inserting a sell-on clause in the agreement. Cherki becomes City’s first major signing of the summer transfer window and is expected to join the squad for pre-season preparations before the Club World Cup kicks off later this month.

In his farewell message to Lyon fans, Cherki expressed gratitude to the club where he rose through the ranks.

“Lyon will always be my home. I’m thankful for everything, from the academy to the first team. But now it’s time for a new challenge at the highest level with Manchester City,” he said.

Cherki made over 100 appearances for Lyon since his debut at the age of 16, scoring crucial goals and dazzling fans with his creativity. He also featured for France’s U-21 side and is widely tipped to break into the senior national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

City manager Pep Guardiola described Cherki as a “special talent” who fits into the club’s vision for the future.

“Rayan is an exceptional young player with rare qualities. We’re excited to help him develop further and integrate into our system. He brings something different, and I believe he’ll shine in our setup,” Guardiola said during the announcement.

Cherki’s arrival is expected to provide added depth to City’s attacking options, particularly with Kevin De Bruyne nearing the twilight of his career and Phil Foden now assuming a more central role.

Manchester City will represent Europe at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which will feature an expanded format with 32 clubs and take place in the United States. The addition of Cherki is seen as part of City’s strategy to solidify their dominance on the global stage.
