Manchester United have reached an agreement with Brentford to sign Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo in a deal worth £65 million, making him the Red Devils’ third signing of the summer window.
The deal, which could rise to £70 million with performance-based add-ons, marks a significant investment in bolstering United’s attacking options ahead of the new season. Mbeumo, 25, is expected to undergo a medical before travelling with the squad to the United States on Tuesday for their pre-season tour.
After initial bids of £55 million and £62.5 million were turned down by Brentford, United’s final offer met the club’s valuation. This transfer becomes the most expensive outgoing deal in Brentford’s history.
Mbeumo, who joined Brentford from French side Troyes in 2019, enjoyed his best Premier League season last year. He posted career-high numbers in goals, assists, chances created and touches in the opposition box. His shot conversion rate of 23.53 percent ranked him just behind Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak in terms of finishing efficiency.
The Cameroonian forward also impressed with his defensive work, recovering possession 32 times in the opposition third, placing him third among all Premier League players in that metric. Perhaps his most impressive attribute is his ability to drive at defenders. He recorded nine progressive carries that led directly to goals last season, more than any other player in the league.
United manager Ruben Amorim is believed to see Mbeumo as the perfect fit for his system, praising his reliability, work rate, and experience in English football. Mbeumo’s versatility, being able to operate both as a winger and a central striker, adds further depth to United’s front line which already includes new signings Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon.
However, football experts believe the pressure will now be on Mbeumo to hit the ground running at Old Trafford. Unlike Brentford, where expectations are more modest, Manchester United fans will demand immediate results.
The Red Devils, under Amorim’s new regime, are keen to build a consistent and reliable attacking force following a mixed season from players like Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. Mbeumo is being viewed as a mature and dependable presence who can deliver both goals and defensive support in a pressing system.
With this signing, United have sent a clear message of intent ahead of the new Premier League season, and fans will now be eager to see how Mbeumo performs on one of football’s biggest stages.
