Manchester United Secure Matheus Cunha from Wolves in £62.5m Deal to Kick Off Summer Rebuild

English giants Manchester United have confirmed the acquisition of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal reportedly valued at £62.5 million (approximately $83 million). The move, which had been under negotiation for weeks, was officially sealed over the weekend, with the 26-year-old attacker completing the necessary formalities in Manchester.

According to a statement issued by the club, Manchester United revealed they had “reached an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha”, adding that “everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford”. The highly-rated striker is expected to sign a five-year contract, with an option to extend the deal by a further 12 months, pending the completion of visa and registration procedures.

Cunha arrives at Old Trafford following an impressive campaign with Wolves, where he netted 18 goals across all competitions during the 2024/2025 season. His prolific form earned him the club’s Player of the Year award, further underlining his value and impact. Since joining Wolves from Atletico Madrid in January 2023, the Brazilian international has scored 33 goals in 92 appearances, carving out a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most clinical forwards.

The transfer is also significant as Cunha becomes the first signing under new United boss Ruben Amorim, who took over the reins at the end of a disappointing season for the Red Devils. United’s 2024/25 campaign ended on a sour note, with a 15th-place finish—their worst league position since the 1973/74 season—and a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur adding to the frustration of fans and boardroom alike.

The Old Trafford hierarchy are believed to have triggered the release clause in Cunha’s contract to beat other potential suitors to his signature. With this move, Manchester United aim to begin an urgent squad overhaul ahead of the new season, as the club looks to restore its fading glory under Amorim’s stewardship.

Cunha, who has been capped 13 times by Brazil, brings not only firepower but experience and creativity to a Manchester United side in desperate need of revitalization. His arrival is expected to boost attacking options and provide the team with the edge they sorely lacked in the previous campaign.

The Brazilian’s integration into the squad will begin once all paperwork is finalized, and he is officially registered. For United fans, Cunha’s arrival signals the dawn of what they hope will be a new, competitive era at the Theatre of Dreams.
