Markets in Ibadan to Close Until Noon Friday in Honour of Late Olubadan

Ibadan, Nigeria | August 8, 2025

IBADAN, Nigeria Markets across Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, will shut down from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon today, Friday, August 8, 2025, as a mark of respect for the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away last month at the age of 90.

The directive was issued by the Babaloja-General of Oyo State, Alhaji Yekeen Abass, popularly known as YK Abass. Speaking to the press, Abass described the partial closure as a necessary gesture to honour the late monarch’s legacy of service, peacebuilding, and economic support throughout Ibadanland.

“Oba Olakulehin served Nigeria, Oyo State, and Ibadanland with diligence. He was a monarch of peace and created an enabling environment for traders and artisans alike,” said Abass.

Market leaders across Ibadan have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the directive during the designated hours. Residents and traders are also encouraged to observe prayers for the peaceful repose of the late king.

The 43rd Olubadan ascended the throne in July 2024 and died on Monday, July 7, 2025, two days after celebrating his 90th birthday. His reign, though brief, was marked by significant efforts to unify traditional institutions and support local commerce.

Funeral proceedings for the late monarch will take place later today, beginning with a service at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Aremo, Ibadan, followed by an interment ceremony and a public book presentation commemorating his life and reign.
