Medina’s Sacred Landmark Continues to Attract Millions of Devout Worshippers Worldwide

The Prophet’s Mosque, known in Arabic as Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, remains one of Islam’s holiest sites and a deeply revered destination for Muslims across the globe. Situated in the city of Medina in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the mosque is not only a religious sanctuary but also a spiritual magnet for millions who seek closeness to the legacy of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Built originally by the Prophet himself in 622 CE, shortly after his migration (Hijrah) from Makkah to Medina, the mosque holds a place of unparalleled significance in Islamic history. Over the centuries, it has been expanded and beautified by successive Islamic rulers, evolving into the architectural marvel that stands today. What distinguishes the Prophet’s Mosque from countless others is that it houses the sacred tomb of the Prophet Muhammad, alongside those of his two closest companions, Caliphs Abu Bakr and Umar ibn Al-Khattab.

Every year, the mosque welcomes millions of pilgrims, especially during the Hajj and Umrah seasons. While the pilgrimage to Makkah is obligatory for all able Muslims, visiting the Prophet’s Mosque—though not mandatory—is highly recommended. It is believed to hold great reward and is often referred to as a place where supplications are readily accepted.

Pilgrims from Nigeria are among those who frequently journey to Medina, either before or after completing the rites of Hajj in Makkah. According to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), thousands of Nigerian faithful make the spiritual trip annually, often describing their experience in Medina as deeply moving and life-changing. The mosque, with its expansive courtyards and iconic green dome, stands as a symbol of unity, peace, and unwavering devotion.

One of the most revered spots within the Prophet’s Mosque is the Rawdah, an area between the Prophet’s pulpit and his burial chamber, which the Prophet described as “a garden from the gardens of Paradise.” Access to this sacred area is highly sought after and often requires pilgrims to queue patiently for a chance to offer prayers in that blessed space.

The Saudi authorities, under the administration of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, have consistently invested in the mosque’s maintenance and expansion to accommodate the ever-growing number of worshippers. Enhanced crowd management systems, climate-controlled environments, and advanced cleaning protocols are part of ongoing efforts to ensure a serene and safe environment for all.

As devotion continues to draw hearts from across continents to this timeless sanctuary, the Prophet’s Mosque remains more than a historical structure—it is a living embodiment of Islamic heritage and a beacon for those who yearn to connect spiritually with their faith and its noble messenger. For many, the journey to Medina is not just a pilgrimage; it is a heartfelt return to the source of mercy, humility, and divine guidance.
