Mikel Obi Urges Victor Osimhen to Resist Saudi Arabia Move, Eyes Chelsea Future

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has expressed his hope that Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen will not opt for a move to the Saudi Pro League, as Chelsea continues to show interest in signing him this summer. Mikel, who has a close relationship with Osimhen, believes that the striker should prioritize playing for a top European club like Chelsea before considering a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia.

Mikel’s concerns stem from the long-term implications of moving to the Middle East, where the football landscape is less competitive compared to Europe. He advises Osimhen to spend a few more years at a top club like Chelsea, where he can continue to develop his career and compete at the highest level. “Come to us (Chelsea), play for three or four seasons, and then you can consider it later,” Mikel suggested during an appearance on the Obi One Podcast.

However, Mikel also acknowledges the financial allure of Saudi clubs, which could be tempting for Osimhen. “At some point, your head is going to get turned. You have family members talking to you, parents talking to you; it’s generational money. You can’t keep putting it off,” he noted.

Osimhen, who has been on loan at Galatasaray, has impressed with 28 goals in 32 appearances. His future remains uncertain, with Chelsea among several clubs interested in securing his services. The Blues are weighing up options, including Ipswich striker Liam Delap and other younger talents, as they prioritize reinforcing their attacking lineup this summer.

Despite the potential financial benefits of a move to Saudi Arabia, Mikel’s advice reflects his desire to see Osimhen continue to grow as a player in a more competitive European environment. With Chelsea’s ongoing interest and Osimhen’s own ambitions to play in the Premier League, the summer transfer window promises to be pivotal in determining the striker’s next move.
