Authorities in Lahore, Pakistan, have launched a formal investigation into a controversial photo and video shoot involving local model Azhia Khan and photographer Zain Shah at the iconic Wazir Khan Mosque, following allegations of disrespecting the sanctity of the sacred site. The duo now face criminal charges after allegedly filming inside the 17th-century Mughal-era mosque without seeking prior approval or adhering to the required code of conduct.
The incident reportedly took place on August 13, 2025, and came to public attention shortly after visuals from the shoot began circulating on social media.
The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA), represented by official Muhammad Owais, subsequently filed a formal complaint with the Akbari Gate Police Station, resulting in the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) on August 17. The complaint accuses the individuals of conducting a commercial video shoot without authorization, and doing so while the model appeared in attire deemed inappropriate for a religious and historical setting.
Police authorities in Lahore have since confirmed the case and disclosed that efforts are underway to locate both the model and photographer, although their contact details have yet to be officially verified. The local mosque administration has expressed serious displeasure over the incident, describing it as a violation of the sanctity of a holy site held in deep reverence by Muslims both in Pakistan and around the world.
Dr. Tahir Raza Bukhari, Secretary of Pakistan’s Auqaf Department, which oversees religious endowments and mosque management, confirmed that an investigation is actively ongoing, stressing that religious institutions must not be used for unapproved commercial or entertainment-related activities. He added that the mosque holds historical and religious significance that must be respected at all times.
This is not the first time the Wazir Khan Mosque has been at the centre of a public controversy. In 2020, renowned actress Saba Qamar and singer Bilal Saeed faced widespread backlash and legal scrutiny after filming a segment of a music video within the same mosque premises. The incident led to public outcry and stricter enforcement of filming protocols at heritage sites.
Built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the 1600s, the Wazir Khan Mosque is not only a place of worship but also a cultural landmark. Its vibrant frescoes, intricate tile work, and historical architecture have earned it a spot on UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List. Restoration efforts in recent years have been supported by international cultural organizations in partnership with local authorities, underscoring its global significance.
The Pakistani government, through the WCLA and Auqaf Department, has continued to emphasize that sacred and historic locations like the Wazir Khan Mosque are not to be trivialized for fashion shoots, music videos, or social media content that may compromise their dignity. As of now, the legal case against Azhia Khan and Zain Shah remains active, with police stating that further action will be taken once the suspects are located.
