MultiChoice Launches Weekly Subscription Plans for DStv and GOtv

MultiChoice has rolled out a new “Ka Weekie” initiative, introducing weekly subscription options for both DStv and GOtv, in a bid to make entertainment more accessible and affordable. The short-term seven-day packages are now available across a range of bouquets—including DStv Lumba, Access, Family, Compact and GOtv Lite, Value, Max, Supa, and Supa Plus—addressing a growing demand for flexible payment options among viewers with varied budgets and lifestyles

The move comes in direct response to user feedback and Nigeria’s challenging economic climate, marked by inflation exceeding 20 percent and rising living costs. The new plans are designed to appeal particularly to daily wage earners, students, travellers, and others who may find monthly subscriptions unaffordable or too rigid .

Subscribers can sign up for weekly access via the MyDStv and MyGOtv mobile apps, USSD codes, MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, partner banks, or authorised agents across the country. Existing customers retain the freedom to switch seamlessly between weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual plans; unused credit from weekly plans is carried over into the next billing cycle

Dr Ogochukwu Monye, an expert in technology law and consumer rights, praised the development as a meaningful advancement for users in lower-income brackets. She noted that while a full “pay‑as‑you‑watch” model would offer the ultimate flexibility, the weekly plans represent a practical step forward that empowers consumers to better align entertainment spending with their cash flows

This initiative follows a wave of backlash and subscriber loss in Nigeria, where MultiChoice lost over 240,000 users between April and September 2024 amid its decision to increase subscription prices by up to 21 percent in March 2025. The introduction of weekly subscriptions is thus part of a broader strategy to stem subscriber attrition and adapt to economic pressures while competing with growing streaming alternatives

Although initially launched in Uganda, industry insiders believe the success of the “Ka Weekie” campaign could pave the way for its roll‑out in Nigeria, following ongoing pilot tests. This innovative offering signals MultiChoice’s commitment to modernising its services and meeting evolving consumer expectations across Africa
