MURIC Condemns Ondo Mosque Attack, Alleges Rising Anti-Muslim Sentiment in Yorubaland

Akure, Ondo State | June 16, 2025 –
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has strongly condemned the recent attack on a mosque in Ondo town, describing it as further evidence of deepening anti-Muslim sentiment in parts of Yorubaland.

The statement follows Sunday’s incident in the Oke-Aro area, where a group of masqueraders reportedly stormed a mosque, disrupted prayers, and physically assaulted the imam’s family members. The incident has sparked widespread outrage among the Muslim community.

In a press release signed by its Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC decried what it called “a pattern of provocation and religious intolerance against Muslims in southwestern Nigeria,” particularly in states dominated by the Yoruba ethnic group.

“This attack is not an isolated case. It is one of several recent provocations aimed at Muslims in Yorubaland. The failure to respect places of worship and the violent intimidation of Muslims are signs of an entrenched anti-Muslim sentiment,” the statement read.

MURIC called on the Ondo State Government, traditional rulers, and security agencies to take swift and decisive action to arrest the attackers and guarantee the safety of Muslim worshippers across the state.

The group also urged Muslim communities in the region to remain calm but vigilant, while also appealing for peaceful coexistence and interfaith respect.

As of Monday, the Ondo State Police Command confirmed ongoing investigations into the incident, assuring that those behind the attack would be brought to justice.
