Muslim Community in Lagos Stages Peaceful Rally in Support of Palestine, Decries Ongoing Violence in Gaza

LAGOS — In a strong display of solidarity with the Palestinian people, members of the Muslim community in Agege, Lagos, held a peaceful procession on Sunday, July 20, to express their concerns over the continuous bombardment and humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. The demonstrators, made up of clerics, youth groups, and residents, gathered in their numbers, carrying placards and banners bearing messages of support for Palestine and condemnation of what they referred to as the “mass atrocities” in the Gaza Strip.

Chanting in unison and waving the Palestinian flag, the participants called for an end to the killing of innocent civilians, many of whom are women and children, as global outrage continues to mount over the rising death toll in the conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas. The rally, which remained peaceful and well-organized, moved through key streets in Agege, drawing attention from passersby and residents who joined in the call for justice.

Organisers of the march stated that the event was not driven by politics, but rather by a shared humanitarian concern for the suffering of people in occupied Palestinian territories. Several speakers during the procession appealed to the international community, including the Nigerian government, to take a principled stance and lend their voice to global efforts aimed at ending what they described as “systematic oppression and human rights violations” in Gaza.

“The people of Palestine are facing what can only be described as genocide,” said one of the clerics who addressed the crowd. “As Nigerians, as Africans, and as human beings, we cannot stay silent in the face of this level of destruction and suffering. This is about justice, about standing with the oppressed.”

The rally follows similar demonstrations held in various parts of the world in recent weeks, as international pressure grows for a ceasefire and a long-term resolution to the decades-long conflict. While no incident of violence was reported during the Lagos gathering, security operatives maintained a visible presence to ensure order throughout the event.

The participants concluded the rally with prayers for peace in Palestine, Nigeria, and the world at large, urging citizens to continue advocating for the protection of human life, dignity, and the right to self-determination.
