Muslim Faithful Hold Special Prayers for Nigerian Air Force, Nation’s Unity

Muslim faithful across the Federal Capital Territory gathered at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base Mosque in Asokoro, Abuja, on Friday to offer special Jumaat prayers for the continued progress of the Nigerian Air Force and the peace and unity of Nigeria.

The prayer session, which formed part of activities to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the NAF, was attended by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, along with other senior officers and personnel of the service.

In his remarks after the prayers, Air Marshal Abubakar expressed deep gratitude to Almighty Allah for sustaining the Nigerian Air Force since its establishment in 1964. He noted that the NAF has grown significantly over the decades and remains a central force in Nigeria’s defence structure.

“The Nigerian Air Force has come a long way—from its modest beginnings during the Nigerian Civil War to becoming a key player in our nation’s fight against terrorism, banditry, and other forms of insecurity,” he said.

According to him, the 60th anniversary is not just a celebration of longevity but also of service, sacrifice, and transformation. He emphasized that the prayers were essential to seek divine support and protection for both the service and the nation at large.

“As we mark this milestone, we remain conscious of our duty to the nation. These prayers remind us of the need to stay grounded in faith and committed to the values that make our service effective,” the Air Chief added.

The Chief Imam of the NAF Base Mosque, who led the sermon and prayer session, called on Nigerians to remain prayerful and united in the face of prevailing challenges. He stressed that intercession for the country is not only a religious obligation but a civic responsibility.

“In Islam, praying for one’s country is a sacred duty. When people unite in faith and prayer, nations thrive,” the cleric noted.

The NAF@60 celebrations will continue with a series of events scheduled to hold in Abuja and Kaduna between May 23 and 25, 2024. These include an international symposium, air displays, and a parade expected to draw participants from various air forces across the globe.

Over the years, the Nigerian Air Force has become an integral part of national security, especially in aerial support roles during counter-insurgency operations in the North-East and anti-banditry missions across the North-West and other troubled zones.

This year’s anniversary comes at a time when Nigeria continues to confront security and economic challenges, with religious and civic groups increasingly turning to prayer as a means of support for national healing and cohesion.

The Jumaat service underscores the role of spirituality in the Armed Forces and the importance of religious inclusion in national observances. It also reflects the broader sentiment among Nigerians who see faith as a vital pillar in the nation’s journey toward peace, security, and development.
