NAF @ 61: Nigerian Air Force Inspires Dreams, Strengthens Community Bonds in Port Harcourt

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken its 61st anniversary celebration to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, with a series of activities designed to inspire young Nigerians and strengthen civil-military relations. Themed “Inspiring Dreams, Strengthening Bonds,” the anniversary events have drawn residents, schoolchildren, and dignitaries alike to various NAF facilities in the city.

As part of the celebration, the NAF has launched its nationwide “Come See Your Air Force” initiative, which runs from May 1 to May 15, 2025. The program includes open-base events that allow members of the public to interact directly with NAF personnel, explore air assets, and learn about the force’s operational history and contributions to national security.

In Port Harcourt, the 115 Special Operations Group hosted guided tours of its base, where visitors were shown various aircraft, platforms, and historical exhibits chronicling the evolution of the Air Force since its establishment in 1964. NAF officers also organized career talks in secondary schools, encouraging students to consider future roles in aviation, engineering, and national defense.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, in a message to participants, emphasized the significance of the outreach. “This celebration is not only a time to reflect on our achievements as a force, but also an opportunity to build stronger ties with the communities we serve. The Nigerian Air Force belongs to the people, and we want them to see themselves in it,” he said.

Residents who attended the events expressed appreciation for the transparency and hospitality shown by NAF personnel. Many noted that the experience helped demystify military operations and reinforced the importance of the Air Force’s role in ensuring national security and humanitarian support.

The Port Harcourt activities form part of a broader program taking place across Nigeria in celebration of NAF @ 61. The anniversary events will climax with high-profile ceremonies and parades scheduled to hold from May 13 to May 20, 2025.

The Nigerian Air Force has grown into a formidable component of the country’s Armed Forces, contributing to internal security, peacekeeping operations, disaster response, and counterterrorism efforts. As it marks 61 years of service, the force reaffirms its commitment to excellence, innovation, and partnership with the Nigerian people.
