NAF Deploys Additional Aircraft to Boost Security in Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba

Abuja, Nigeria | June 2025

In a decisive move to address rising security challenges in the North-Central region, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed additional aircraft to intensify surveillance and operational support in Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba States.

The deployment, which is part of broader efforts to restore peace and stability, is expected to enhance intelligence gathering, rapid response, and coordinated operations with ground forces combating criminal elements in the region.

NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, confirmed the deployment in a statement released on Tuesday, noting that the move demonstrates the military’s commitment to protecting lives and property amid growing insecurity in rural communities.

“These deployments are strategic and based on intelligence assessments indicating the need for increased aerial presence in these areas. Our aim is to deter criminal activity and support ongoing ground operations,” Gabkwet stated.

Communities in the affected states have in recent months experienced attacks attributed to armed bandits, herders-farmers conflicts, and communal clashes, prompting calls for urgent intervention by security agencies.

The latest NAF deployment includes combat and surveillance aircraft, which will operate from forward operating bases to ensure effective coverage and timely response to threats.

Local authorities and residents have welcomed the move, expressing hope that the reinforced air presence will curtail criminal activities and allow displaced persons to return to their homes.

Security experts say the deployment signals a renewed focus on air-ground coordination and the need for sustained military pressure to dismantle armed groups destabilising the region.
