The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed a massive consignment of 491,000 tablets of tramadol, with an estimated street value of ₦91 million, in Kano State.
The operation, carried out on Tuesday, is part of NAFDAC’s intensified efforts to curb the circulation of illicit and unregistered pharmaceutical products across Nigeria. Officials of the agency confirmed that the seized drugs, which were smuggled into the country without proper documentation, posed a grave threat to public health, especially among youths.
Speaking during the destruction exercise, NAFDAC representatives reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding the health of Nigerians and warned against the abuse and illegal importation of controlled substances.
The exercise in Kano underscores the ongoing nationwide crackdown on fake and dangerous drugs, particularly opioids like tramadol, which have been linked to widespread addiction and mental health issues. NAFDAC has also called on citizens to report suspicious drug-related activities and support the campaign against drug abuse in communities.
