NAFOWA Marks World Blood Donor Day, Urges Nigerians to Embrace Voluntary Blood Donation

Abuja, Nigeria – June 14, 2025

As part of activities marking the 2025 World Blood Donor Day, the Nigerian Air Force Officers’ Wives Association (NAFOWA) has called on Nigerians to adopt voluntary blood donation as a life-saving act of patriotism and compassion.

Speaking at a sensitisation and blood donation drive held at the Nigerian Air Force Base in Abuja, the President of NAFOWA, Mrs. Rakiya Abubakar, stressed the importance of safe and readily available blood in emergency medical care, particularly during crises and maternal health emergencies.

“We are using this occasion to highlight the need for consistent voluntary blood donors. A single pint of blood can save up to three lives. Nigerians must understand that donating blood is a civic responsibility,” she said.

The event, held in collaboration with the National Blood Service Commission, featured free medical screening, awareness sessions, and a voluntary blood donation exercise, which attracted military personnel, their families, and civilians.

Mrs. Abubakar commended existing blood donors and encouraged more Nigerians to participate regularly to help reduce the country’s dependence on commercial and replacement donors.

World Blood Donor Day is celebrated globally every June 14 to raise awareness about the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts.
