NASS Schedules Joint Sitting to Commemorate 2025 Democracy Day

The National Assembly will hold a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives on Wednesday, June 12, 2025, to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration, a significant national event honouring 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria.

According to an official statement released by the Clerk to the House of Representatives, Yahaya Danzaria, the special joint sitting will take place in the House of Representatives chamber at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja. Proceedings are expected to begin by 11:00 a.m., ahead of the arrival of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is slated to address the lawmakers and the nation at exactly 12:00 noon.

Themed “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development,” this year’s commemoration reflects Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to consolidate democratic gains and foster inclusive governance since the return to civilian rule in 1999. The session will highlight the role of the Legislature in promoting transparency, accountability, and constitutional order within the framework of the Fourth Republic.

President Tinubu, who will serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the session, is expected to deliver a keynote speech focusing on his administration’s democratic journey so far, as well as policy directions for national unity, security, and economic recovery.

As part of the activities lined up for the event, the President is also expected to confer National Honours on select serving and past federal lawmakers who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to legislative excellence and national service.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas have jointly set up a committee involving members of both chambers to coordinate logistics and ensure a seamless programme.

In a related development, the Federal Government has declared June 12 a public holiday to allow citizens to reflect on the country’s democratic evolution and participate in planned events across the country.

This year’s observance will be the first under the renewed legislative leadership and is expected to reinforce the spirit of nationhood while acknowledging the sacrifices made to entrench democracy in Nigeria.
