National Assembly Declares 7-Day Recess Following Buhari’s Death

The National Assembly has officially paused all legislative proceedings for one week to mourn the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari. The announcement, delivered by Clerk to the National Assembly Kamoru Ogunlana in Abuja on Monday, states that sittings are suspended with immediate effect and will resume on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 

The statement pays tribute to Mr. Buhari, who died in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82, noting his dedication as both Commander-in-Chief and twice-elected civilian president. His legacy of unity and integrity remains at the forefront of the National Assembly’s tribute 

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Abbas Tajudeen directed lawmakers to adjust their schedules to actively participate in funeral arrangements and tributes .The Assembly’s condolences were extended to the Government and people of Nigeria, those of Katsina State, and to the deceased’s wife, children, and extended family 

Buhari, who led Nigeria initially as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and subsequently as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, is remembered for championing national unity and military discipline. The assembly prayed that “Almighty Allah grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus”
